Acts of Kindness

Well, I confirmed recently that acts of kindness do not always have to be random. They don't have to be just a freebie that you give away to posters in your blog. It's not just the smile you give to a stranger as you go malling. Yes, acts of kindness can be deliberate. And while random acts of kindness are all well and good and what we need in this crazy world of ours, deliberate acts of kindness are even more important. Why? Because they are conscious efforts to make this world a better place. And we do them with our hearts and souls.

I know it's late, but I would again like to thank everyone who participated in the fundraiser for the benefit of the Carmelite nuns of Sta. Ignacia, Tarlac. With your deliberate acts of kindness, we raised almost P45,000. This amount, and the beautiful cards that you made were turned over to Sr. Teresa last April 6. Candy, Jenn, and I went to visit them at their monastery in Tarlac. You can read about Jenn's account in her blog.

The money we raised was initially intended to help fund the nuns' unfinished chapel, but when we arrived there, we saw that there is still alot of work to be done. Here are some photos of the chapel which is being worked on sporadically, depending on the inflow of funds.

The money we raised is but a drop in the bucket compared to the amount they still need. Their estimate is around P2M. (Any more philanthropists out there?) Thus, they requested, and we agreed, that they use the money we turned over to finish up their reflectory. And what do you know, it's just the exact amount they need.

During our visit, we were also able to discuss some fundraising strategies with Sr. Teresa. They are going to use the cards you made to write to individuals who would be willing to donate to their community. But, since they are cloistered in their monastery, except from their relatives and friends, they do not know that many people. Thus, IF YOU KNOW PEOPLE WHO WOULD LIKE TO HELP, KINDLY EMAIL ME THEIR NAMES AND ADDRESSES SO WE CAN SEND THEM A CARD. Rest assured that their names will be kept confidential and their donations will be duly acknowledged by the nuns in writing and in prayer.

When they saw the beautiful and extremely creative cards you made, they were awed and impressed. It was gratifying to see them ogling, and caressing the cards. They were so child-like and sincere in their praises that I, who is not a cardmaker, almost rushed home to make them more cards. :-)

They also saw my scrapbook and immediately, they asked us if we could teach them how to make cards and scrapbook layouts. The cards, so they can sell them, and scrapbooking, so they can make their history book creatively. We said yes, of course, as deliberate acts of kindness don't just end with one act.

Thus, a request for more assistance:
1) If you would like to volunteer to teach cardmaking and scrapbooking, please coordinate with us at the PS group.
2) Donate scrapbooking stuff that you do not use or need anymore, anything to get them started. If you are spring-cleaning and you cannot sell all your items, they will surely serve a good purpose in the nuns' hands.
3) Cash donations are still welcome, you can e-mail me and I can give you their bank account number where you can deposit.

Thank you very much. God bless you!

In the Map

Since yesterday this silly little ditty has been running through my head. "I'm the map...I'm the map...I'm the map." Okey I know that wasn't really helpful but readers with toddlers should be able to recognise that as the Map song in Dora the Explorer. Talk about LSS. And I'm talking about "last song syndrome" not "local scrapbook store." (Wink.)

So which particular map am I talking about? Why, Page Maps, of course.

Late last December 2007, on a whim, I sent Becky Fleck an e-mail saying I would like to contribute an LO to her site. Becky keeps all the names of "applicants" in a jar and she randomly draws names to choose contributors. Knowing her newsletter is very popular, especially since she has a new book coming out, I prepared myself for a long wait. I was pleasantly surprised (and sufficiently rattled) when on February 20, I received an email from Becky asking me to contribute to the April newsletter. What a wonderful opportunity to work on a fresh, never before seen Page Map.

I have been a follower of Page Maps since Nita introduced me to it. But it wasn't until recently that I fully utilised the easy to follow sketches. I love that it cuts my scrapping time by helping me choose and print the right size photos for my layouts. While some people might think it removes the originality and creativity from scrapbooking, I assure you, it doesn't. You still have to choose your photos, write your journaling and match your papers, which I believe are the very heart of scrapbooking. I scrap to preserve my memories. I do not have to reinvent the wheel each time so I appreciate any outside help I can get.

This month, I am lucky to be featured in the April Page Maps with other very talented scrappers and Pinay scrappers Khei and Mich.

Here is my LO which has me singing..."If there's a place you want to go, I'm the one you need to know, I'm the map...."

SEPARATION ANXIETY...NOT!

I have scrapped this photo before and while I love the original layout I feel it didn't quite tell the whole story of Sarah's first day at school. The Map provides room for more photos and lengthier journaling so it was perfect.

Journaling:
While you may look vulnerable and uncertain in this photo, you were actually excited to be going to school for the first time. You saw how much your Kuya Diego enjoyed school so you couldn't wait to find out what wonders awaited you, too. With Teacher Ana looking out after you, you settled right in. I knew I didn't have to worry. But can you blame me if I felt a little bit anxious? At only 2 years old you were just a baby! But there you were - bravely and happily exploring a brand new world called Nursery. Without me. - Mama (3/22/08)

P.S. You are 8 years old today. Just about to finish the second grade. And you still love going to school. But I know now, wherever you may be going, I am always with you.

Materials Used:
PPS - DCWV, Making Memories; Diecuts - Craft Express, Fancy Pants, American Crafts, We R Memory Keepers; Ribbons - Unknown; Stickers - Provo Craft, K & Co.; Paint - Making Memories; Template - Coluzzle; Pen - Staedtler; Adhesive - Saunders; Paper clip.

This was in the Page Maps April Newsletter. Does this mean I'm "published" now? :-)

March Recap

OK, might as well do this a day earlier while I still have internet and I really doubt I'm gonna be able to scrap anything else tonight. Tomorrow I will have to scrap my sample LO for the Kaya 12 challenge and that's coming out April, so watch out for that.

Four target layouts this month and I actually scrapped (drum roll, please....) ta-daan... 8 layouts. I've posted some here and here.

I still have to share this, which was supposed to be my second entry to Lasting Impression's Webster's Pages challenge. It was too late for the deadline but since I had everything planned in my head, I made it anyway.

FANTASY RIDE

Journaling:
The Grand Carousel was your favorite ride at the Enchanted Kingdom. You even had a favorite pony - the yellow one with the flowers on its bridle. After each ride, you rushed to line up again...and again...over and over. Until finalyy, I, who had to ride with you innumerable times, finally said, "No more." - Mama (3/1/08)

Materials:
PPS - Webster's Pages, Diecuts - Cuttlebug, Sizzix Bigz; Stamps - Prima, Fancy Pants; Ink - Tsukineko; Rubons - Webster's Pages; Glitter - Martha Stewart; Ric Rac - Joan; Tag - K & Co.; Pen - Staedtler; Adhesives - Saunders.

You already know that against all odds (so many beautiful LOs in the gallery), "Adore" placed second in the challenge. :-)

And this is my take on Mia's challenge to use blings on a layout about your entertainment idol. I decided to go for an old college crush so I could also scrap my old photos. Yup! That scrawny youth in the pics is me. Those were the days... Not only did I use old photos, that is the actual Rick Springfield cutout that was on my red memo board (see bottom photo closely).

HARD TO HOLD

Journaling:
In college, I had a major crush on Rick Springfield. I had his posters plastered on my dorm walls. I cut out his pictures from Jingle Song Hits. He watched over me as I studied and slept. I played his cassette tape out louad until my dorm mates complained. I even rented his movie "Hard to Hold" and saw it over and over on my cousin Benjo's betamax. He was so handsome and sexy and when he sings "Jessie's Girl" with fire and passion, I wished I was going out with a boy named Jessie.

Materials:
PPS - DCWV (Retro and Glitter packs); Glitter - Stickles; Paint - MM Glitter Glaze; Diecut - Cuttlebug; Pen - Uniball Signo; Adhesives - UHU glue.

I scrapped another layout that I can't reveal as yet until it's posted in the gallery I submitted it to. I can hardly wait until it's April 1 in the U.S. But I can't resist to share SHE described my LO is "beautiful." I'm sure she tells everyone that, but let's pretend for just one minute that it's just to me. Hahaha.

Speaking of which, I just realised I haven't posted my take on the PS round robin challenge. You can see all the interesting takes on CV's initial challenge in Scrapbytes.

@ POOH'S HOUSE

Journaling:
Sarah and kahlo enjoy a raremoment away from Mama's camera as they share the wonder of discovering Winnie the Pooh's tree trunk at Clark Airbase picnic grounds.

Materials:
CS - DCWV; PPS - SEI, EK Success; Stamp - Inque Boutique; Ink - Clearsnap; Ribbon and tag- unknown; ATB paper tagger; Acrylic embellishment - Japan Home; Diecut - unknown; Pen - Staedtler; Adhesive - Saunders.

I knew before I passed it on the next robin that this LO looked half-baked (that unmatted photo in the bottom and the title bother me) but I didn't want it to get stuck with me. I've had for 3 days already and I didn't want to keep the next scrapper waiting.

And I thought I'd share an LO I did last year but never got the courage to share. You might call it a lesson in "how not to use walnut ink spray." LOL.

KYLE LOVES DIRT

This was supposed to be a clean and simple layout but when I finished, it was just too clean. So I thought I'd liven things up a bit by spraying Walnut Ink at the bottom. The problem with walnut ink is, once it touches your medium, you cannot wipe it off or even smudge it. See the concentric circles? That's the exact way the ink spurted out of my spray. I should have masked the photo to protect it from too much spray. Or, as Marian suggested, used foam to just smudge ink on the places I wanted it on.

Materials:
CS - DCWV; PPS - Creative Inaginations, Fancy Pants; Diecuts - 3 Bugs in a Rug; Stamps - Inque Boutique, Autumn Leaves; Ink - Clearsnap, Tsukineko; Stickers - Joan.

On the homefront, my middle DD turned 8 and my youngest DD graduated from Prep. We had our first camping activity as a family albeit with the other gradeschool students and in school compound. And hurray for summer vacation!!!

Irony

"Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs."

All this week I had been looking forward catching up on e-mail, surfing the net, chatting with my friends, all in the comfort of my home. After a hectic week reviewing the KiDS for their final exams, camping in school with the boy and girl scouts, attending Kahlo's graduation, I was craving for some internet time. But, alas!

There was something wrong with my cable connection and I couldn't log on. I was informed that it would be fixed next week. No internet??? Death to ZPDee!!!

So this morning I begged my DH to take me with him to his studio. I usually beg him to please let me stay at home. For at least in his studio I could catch some wi-fi signal and connect. I needed to upload my Kaya 11 challenge entry and inform the core team of the next challenge. So here I am, in the last place I want to be.

I finished answering my e-mail and uploading/downloading any stuff that needed work and yet I am still here. This is the part that I hate the most. Waiting for DH to wrap up his work so we can go home. It's been like this everyday for the past few months.

I can almost hear Alanis Morissette singing in the background, "Isn't it ironic? Don't you think?"

A Resurrection

Happy Easter everybody! Hope in the midst of all the easter eggs, bunnies, and candies, we take time to reflect on the real significance of this day.

And now, after that public service announcement...I'm baaack...Well, not really. I just have this urge to share with you the layouts I have been working on the past few weeks and I can't wait until the Monthly Recap. I have a few minutes left before I go back to reviewing the KiDS for their final exams, so here I am. Yup! We still have classes next week. It's really a bummer because the KiDS are already in a vacation mood and nothing seems to be entering their cake and coke (the softdrinks) induced minds right now. It was Sarah's 8th birthday yesterday, so they have a surfeit of sweets.

I started scrapping with an easy LO. Easy, in the sense that I just wanted this photo scrapped with the most minimum fuss possible. I look at it and want to put it back in the scrapping table but so far, I am managing to exercise remarkable constraint.

BADUY LUV

Journaling:
I know you think it's really kitcsh to have our photo taken under a tree. But seeing how few photos we have together, I'll take all I can get even if it's baduy.

Materials:
PPS - Autumn Leaves, Cosmo Cricket; Flower - Prima; Brad - Karen Foster; Stamps - Inque Boutique, Bam Pop, Inkadinkadoo; Ink Pads - Clearsnap, Staz-on; Pen - Uni-ball; Lace - unknown; Adhesive - UHU.

Still feeling easy, I worked on this next. Finally! This has been in my pending stack since before the Idol contest last year. Yup! This was our practice run for the contest finals and I just finished it this month. Talk about backlog. I couldn't finish it before because I couldn't think of a confession that would go well with the photo I had chosen. Well, I'm glad I waited because the perfect journaling came to mind just recently.

I Confess...

Journaling:
To you my dearest Kahlo Julia. That I like having you sleep beside me. From the day you were born 'til now that you are 6. I love the way you snuggle up to me for warmth. I love the sweet smell of your hair. I will never tire of kissing your soft cheeks. I love whispering "I love you" in your ear. And I especially love how, even in your deepest slumber, you will turn to me and whisper "I love you, too, right back. Love, Mama. 3/15/08

Materials (all courtesy of Visual Creations):
PPS - American Crafts, 7 Gypsies, My Mind's Eye; Ribbon - American Crafts; Stickers - 7 Gysies, Joan, EK Success; Pen - Staedtler; Ink - Adhesive - UHU.

The following layouts are based on Becky Fleck's PageMaps. I have redicovered an appreciation for the Maps. They certainly make my scrapbooking life easier and faster without hindering my creativity. Since my goal is now to scrap as many layouts as I can in the limited time I have, they sure come in handy. I now spend the whole week preparing - choosing, resizing and printing my photos - to scrap on the weekends.

BIG BROTHER

Journaling:
No matter how hard you insist now that you hate your sister because she always bugs you, I know you know, that deep in your heart you love her deeply. So it was when you were four. So it is now that you are ten. Nothing - not even a broken toy, a torn comic book or any other perceived offense can ever change that. When you are upset or angry with her, remember these moments. Search your heart, count to ten, and you will find the reasons why you two are brother and sister. I know you will always love and look out for your younger sister.

(OK - I will admit I rambled on a bit, trying to fill that space in the middle. And I'm too lazy and cheap to turn on the computer and printer for the journaling so pardon my handwriting.)

Materials:
PPS - Prima; Chipboard - American Crafts; Stamps - Autumn Leaves; Ink - Clearsnap, Tsukineko; Embossing Powder - Ranger; Acrylic Paint - Li'l Davis; Fabric Paint - Tulip; Ribbon - Unknown; Pen - Staedtler; Adhesives - UHU.

GOOFY GEEKS

Journaling:
Bubble 1 - Free time during class! I'm glad Teacher Jason understands we can't be serious students all the time.

Bubble 2 - So! This is what you do in computer class. You borrowed my camera for a class project and I was pleasantly surprised to find these photos of you, your classmates and teachers goofing areound. Truly, learning is fun!

Bubble 3 - Diego - you're a GEEK. But you are a funny GEEK.

Materials:
PPS - Basic Grey, Bam Pop; Diecut - unknown; Cuttlebug; Ribbon - Joans; Stickers - Joan; Ink - Clearsnap, Tsukineko; Pen - Statedler; Adhesive - UHU; Foam - Darice

I hope I can still scrap next weekend before the month ends. 'Til next. Thanks for looking.

Pick of the Day

So this is what it feels like to be POTD in a forum where nobody really knows you. My layout was chosen as POTD over at Serendipity Scrapbooks last March 19. And I didn't even know. It was my first time to visit their site and I thought at first my upload didn't go through, but it did.

Here are the comments from the lovely ladies over there.

This is the layout which I made last March 15. I guess this can't wait until the monthly recap. :-)

If it looks a bit familiar, it's because I used the remaining Jenni Bowlin papers from my Kaya 10 entry.

This photo was, again, taken by my Kahlo. She was only 4 1/2 years old then. Scrapbooking moms must train their children to use the camera as soon as they can handle a sippy cup with steady hands. Hahaha.

Journaling on hidden tag behind photo reads: At 40, I still have dreams that have yet to come true. I dream of being a published writer and photographer. I dream of becoming the best wife and mother to my "dreams come true" - my husband and our three kids. I believe my other dreams will soon be realities. It's just a matter of time. They will come true.

Materials: PPS - Jenni Bowlin; Chipboard - Americam Crafts distressed with Li'l Davis acrylic paint; Chalks - Craf-T; Daisy D's rubon; Ink - Ranger, Clearsnap; Pen - Staedtler; Adhesive - UHU; Lace and lock and key - unknown

Viernes Santo (Not Really!)

Here in the Philippines, when you say "mukha kang Byernes Santo", it means the person you are talking to is sad or gloomy. Well, I was hardly gloomy yesterday. In fact, I was inappropriately (given that it was Good Friday) ecstatic.

I only turned on my computer to retrieve a document when I saw an offline message from Nina. She was congratulating me for winning in the Lasting Impression Websters' Pages challenge. I immediately checked the PS egroup if there was an announcement but it was a slow day at the board, given that it is the Holy Week break, and there were few posters. None of them Maybs or April, DTs of Lasting. I began wondering if too much KFC and McDonalds in Taiwan made Nina delusional until I saw the official announcement here.

I was happy to be one of the winners and even happier to see the names of my friends Nita and Cookie. Cookie was online so I immediately buzzed her. Nita wasn't so I called her up on her cellphone to give her the good news. She thought I was joking. I said, it's not April 1. She responded everyday is April Fool's for me. Now I was getting irritated that she wouldn't share my excitement, so I told her would I be wasting my precious free calls calling you? She said she would believe it when she saw it and unfortunately for my credibility, they just had a brownout at their house and she couldn't connect to the internet. She had to call Au, who had to confirm it to her. Hahaha.

My layout Adore placed second. Here is what Brandin O'Neill, owner of Webster's Pages had to say about my entry.

"Scrapbooking doesn’t always have to be feminine and we love when men are brought into the pages. We love to see the masculine interpretation of our papers while keeping the subject delicate and gentle. That’s how we like our papers interpreted."

Well, I loved working these photos and papers, too. Truth is, I have had these papers since last year, and it was only after Candy persuaded me to join the challenge (thanks Candy) that I found the perfect photos to go with them. Even if I had not won, I would be quite content with the fact that I captured and scrapped these precious interaction between my DH and youngest DD.

These were taken while we were in line inside The Rialto in Enchanted Kingdom. The light wasn't very good, but I couldn't resist taking the photos. DH and Kahlo were unaware that I was taking photos of them, until I called them to smile for the camera (third photo). See that bemused look on their faces? It was like they were in their own world and I rudely interrupted them. But they still obliged with smiles. (This scrapbooker trained them well. Hehe.)

The photos were a bit blurred but when I converted them to sepia, they were perfect. Here's the original photo.

It was just too orange so I changed the colors. I don't use flash and my WB is always set to auto. No time to twiddle with controls if I hope to capture fleeting moments like these. But I do compose my shot through the viewfinder before I click so I don't have to crop in Photoshop. Less work that way. :-)

I had second thoughts about using the three photos when I saw the other entries. A big blowup of the first photo would have made a similar impact as the other beautiful LOs in the gallery. But I wanted to scrap the two other supporting photos as well and in the end I was quite happy how it turned out.

I was mesmerized by the look in my DD's face that I couldn't think of any other title than Adore. It really seemed appropriate. I kept the journaling short and sweet, too. Anything more would've been superfluous.

BTW, this is my first local challenge win. I couldn't be happier that it was this particular LO.

Internet Disconnect

I miss blogging and blog-hopping. I love visiting my friends' blogs, learning the latest and getting inspired by their words and works. But recently, I haven't been online much. And strangely, while I missed it, I also lived without it.

It wasn't so much a conscious attempt to disconnect from the internet in the first place. But when I am in my DH's studio, I am forced to hijack wi-fi from the neighbors. It's a good day when I can send and receive YM messages. The connection is so low I can't even check my e-mail. Sometimes I go to my brother-in-law's house (which is in the same compound) so I can get a stronger signal. But I stopped doing that when I overheard him and his wife talking about a nasty spirit that lives in their DS's room. I am not that desperate for a signal.

And then we usually get home so late that I am just too tired to turn on the wi-fi, turn on my computer, and surf. I sleep as early as 10:00 PM now, would you believe. My DH likes it that way. He always complained that I let time get away from me when I'm in front of my computer. He used to ask how I could expect to discipline the KiDS regarding Playstation and Nintendo time when I couldn't even discipline myself regarding computer time. He particularly hated it when he woke up in the wee hours of the morning to find me still at it. He had a hard time waking me up in the mornings and he blamed my lack of sleep on too much internet.

So by force of circumstances, and my DH's powerful personality (wink) I spend less time on the internet. I thought I'd miss it. But I didn't, really.

I now spend more quality time with my KiDS, going over their homeworks, reading books, or any other fun activity they can think of as we wind down to sleep.

I started reading books again. I used to read one book a week. Less when the babies started coming, and then I stopped when I started scrapbooking. I scrapped rather than read.

I am less tired. It may not seem a very physical activity but surfing the internet can be very tiring.

I feel freer. I always felt obliged to respond to every e-mail in my inbox but then I realized the word wouldn't stop turning if I didn't. My apologies if you are still waiting for a response from me. You can always buzz me at YM. :-)

And most importantly, I am spending more time scrapping. It also helped that I reconciled myself with the fact that I do not have to scrap everyday. I used to get so stressed out thinking I should have done a layout even if I was tired from running errands the whole day. So now I scrap every weekend, away from the computer. And oh, yes, I let my KiDS have their Playstation and Nintendo time. That way they won 't bother me as I scrapped (bad mama.) I am more productive now. And wasn't that the purpose of my constantly blogging and blog-hopping?

Where in the World is Ninoy?

Remember this?

It used to loom over Paseo de Roxas and Ayala Avenue in Makati City. Then it was moved to Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac City for feng shui reasons. Urban legend has it that the statue's posture (stumbling) and the number of steps (four - signifying death) augured bad luck to the country's premier financial district. Thus, it was moved to the Cojuangcos' Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac. I guess they are not afraid of bad feng shui or they really do care more about family, bad luck or not. Look at how they always rally around Kris Aquino, har-har.

But then, when we went home last March 2, I was intrigued to note this:

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS NINOY???

Some idiot or idiots moved him in Cut Cut I and made him sit.

Now, this bothers me. Extremely. I am not sure if the masterminds behind this even have the permission of the artist. If you were the artist, would you like your masterpiece to be vandalized like this? And yes, it is vandalism because Ninoy sitting on a bench is not the artist's original vision and execution. The artist's vision was to depict that exact moment in history when Ninoy was gunned down to his death. Many didn't like this particular interpretation of a snippet of history so the statue was first, relocated and now, disassembled and re-assembled into its current form.

This statue is now the butt of jokes in Tarlac. Some say Ninoy got tired and walked away to just sit on his butt and rest. Others say he looks like he is driving a right-hand drive vehicle, the way his arms and legs are posed. And someone has made lechon manok out of the bird, some jest. I say, they should have left well enough alone. It was not even nicely executed. Coming from the highway, you see a round white lamp aligned perfectly with Ninoy's crotch. It's a mockery of everything Ninoy stood for. Public art is paid for by public taxes but let's respect them and the artists' rights, shall we?

February Recap

This month....

I am taking baby steps towards a new career. I will tell you more about it once I am taking more confident strides.

We celebrated birthdays - lots of them. Kahlo turned 6 and Diego turned 10. My babies are not babies anymore. By a strange coincidence, all of my MIL's 3 balaes celebrate their birthdays in February. My mom's b-day is on Feb. 27 and my MIL's b-day is on the 26th. We celebrated MIL's b-day last Sunday with her friends. We were scheduled to go home to Tarlac to be with my own mom, but since MIL had a major surgery scheduled after her b-day, I prevailed upon my mom to hold her celebration tomorrow.

Some scrapping friends (Lindy, Candy, Rachelle, Khei, Jenn, Cookie, Liza) and I volunteered to organize an event called Scrap, Share and Shop - for the benefit of the Carmelite nuns in Tarlac, who need help to finish their chapel. So we have been exchanging notes via email, meeting and having ocular inspections of scrapbook stores (cha-ching!)

I did get to scrap some layouts. Once I reconciled myself with the fact that I could only get to scrap during the weekends, I breathed easier. No more pressure that I have to scrap everytime I find myself with precious free time, as few as they are far between.

This February target - 4 layouts.

I (Heart Candy)

My entry to Studio Azul's sketch challenge. The sketch was made by dear friend Au Lim. It's a great sketch to work with. I've had the b&w photo of Kahlo for the longest time and I just had to add three more small photos. Thank God for Adobe Photoshop for making it easy to crop the perfect size needed.

Journaling:
You are a regular candy monster! You love sweets so much you are willing to risk tooth decay for just a taste of heart-shaped swits.

Materials Used:
CS - DCWV; PPS - Prima; Chipboard - Craft Express, Fancy Pants, Best Buy; Die-cut - Sizzix; Buttons - Autumn Leaves; Glitter - Making Memories; Acrylic paint - Making Memories; Adjesives - UHU glue, Zots, Krylon Fixatif; Ink Pad - Colorbox; Pen - Staedtler Tri-plus.

ADORE
I have had these Webster's Pages papers since middle of last year, I think. And it took a challenge for me to actually bring them out. I just added the prerequisite stickers and voila! Notice the hand-cutting? It will be awhile before I attempt anything like that again. I just love these photos of Kahlo and DH. I could have written a more lengthy title or journaling but somehow the photos seem to say it all.

Journaling:
I wonder who adores who more? Your love for each other is quite palpable.

Quote:
You were made perfectly to be loved - and surely I have loved you, in the idea of you, my whole life long. - Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Materials Used:
Papers - DCWV carstock, Webster's Pages Parlor Collection (Savory and Picnic), Deja Views; Stickers - Webster's Pages; Ink - Tsukineko, Colorbox; Photo turn/corners/brad - We R Memory Keepers; Foam - Darice; Adhesives - UHU glue, Zots; Ribbon - unknown.

Game On - Touching is Good
"Touching is Good!" is the Nintendo slogan for the DS Lite, and I think it's perfect for these moments when the KiDS are huddled together over an activity. A simple layout for sure but I had lots of fun doodling on the arrows with fabric paint.

Journaling:
A rare moment of peace. Ever since your Lola Mama gave you this Nintendo DS Lite for X'mas, you fought over who plays first, who got to play the longest, who has more points. But there are times the game gets you so absorbed you forget to fight.

Materials:
American Crafts - Sixth Avenue PPS, Frank mini-marks rub-ons, Latte thickers, Playhouse plastic arrows. Others - DCWV CS, Tulip fabric paint, Hambly rub-on, Autumn Leaves stamp, Colorbox ink, UHU glue, Uni-ball Signo pen.

Sarah Sweet
This is my Kaya 10 all digital entry. I did this one afternoon while waiting for the KiDS in school. That's the beauty of digital scrapbooking. You can scrap anywhere, no fuss, no mess. Just two chocolate wrappers. :-) I had fun discovering new tools in Photoshop. I've always liked the look of big photos in layouts but have never attempted it on traditional. It's cheaper by far to do it digitally. LOL.

Journaling:
You always look at the world through rose-colored glasses. I know that soon you will outgrow your childlike innocence but I hope you continue to be sweet and embrace everything with bright-eyed wonder.

Materials Used:
Danielle Young's Springtime Kit, Fonts from Shabby Princess, Others are Fiorex and Gigi.

Time Flies Altered Clock
This is actually my third altered clock. I don't have a photo of my second (which I gave to the KiDS' piano teacher last Christmas. I rushed it while they were having their lessons downstairs. As soon as the music stopped playing, I knew my time was up and I didn't even get the chance to get a photo.)

Materials:
American Crafts - paper, diecuts, rubons. Others - Autumn Leaves stamp, Creative Imagination stickers, Karen Foster brads, UGU glue.

Much Awaited Altered Clock

Okay, I really finished this last December but I had never posted it. This is my first altered clock which I made with lots of online help from Cookie and Liza. I was just happy when I finished and heard that ticking sound. I was half-afraid it wouldn't work. I gave this to my inaanak, Kayin, who's African name translates to "much awaited."

And well, what do you know, I finished another layout earlier today. It was supposed to be my second Webster's Papers entry which I never got around to doing because of RWR (real world responsibilities.) But since DH has my scanner, maybe I could post that with the March layouts. Just in case I am not as productive next month. Hehehe.

Another Peek

What a way to start a new week! First, I didn't have to wake up so early because the KiDS have no school today, to make up for our being in school last Saturday for Family Day. Second, after sleeping in the studio for the past few days, woke up today with DH in the house. And last but not least, this exciting message from Jenn that I had won A Peek Into Yesterday's Pillar of Strength contest. My layout is now resting comfortably in their home page. Part of the perks of winning aside from the $25 GC from their online store.

I entered one of my favorite layouts, I Know Her Heart, with a major revision. I included an accordion-style hidden journaling, written to my mother to comply with the requirement of the contest that I should indicate why that person is my pillar of strength.

Here is the hidden journaling. I got the idea of putting the journaling under the square quote from Marj's Dance with My Father LO.

Dearest Mommy, Manang Marissa tells me you were just 16 when this photo was taken. You looked so young, carefree and innocent. How I wish I had known you then. I know that raising me and my 7 siblings wasn't the easiest task. You faced many difficulties and challenges just to make sure that we had food on the table and we all had a good education. Truly, it's the miracle of your, and daddy's love that we all finished college. How you managed it a government employees' salaries, I still cannot fathom. I hope that with my own family of 3 children, I have even half of your strength and resilience. You taught me that with your family behind you, anything is possible. You remind me that indeed, only good will come from a parent's love and dedication. In my eyes, you are always beautiful. Love, Pinkee

Hope this week continues to be a good one. :-)

Random Acts of Kindness

I read somewhere that the week of February 11 was Random Acts of Kindness week. I hope I did my share of being kind as I went through my week, but then they wouldn't mean as much if I listed them down here.

But I'd like to share with you some acts of kindness that friends bestowed upon me last week, as random as they were unexpected, as a thank you to them.

To Manang Marissa, for giving me a gift subscription of Creating Keepsakes and Simple Scrapbooks magazines, to Beth, for my subscription of Scrapbooks, Etc. and Memory Makers. I finally received my first issues (except for Simple Scrapbooks) last week, courtesy of Beth who was mailing address in the U.S. and Maricar, who brought them home with her. Now at least I am only two months behind in my magazines compared to waiting months for back issues to appear at Book Sale.

Thanks to Donna for giving me some Dream Street papers, perfect for a boy page. And to Candy for the two pieces of Bo Bunny papers, but more than that the encouragement to join the Bo Bunny contest. I didn't have time to make an LO but I'd like to share that Candy won 2nd prize in that contest.

From Marj, a surprise package, "for no reason at all." I knew last year that she was giving me a bottle of Prima flowers (she had sent them to Donna last year) but I was quite surprised with the other items inside the bag. Thanks Marj, I can certainly use these because these are items I would never have thought of buying for myself.

From the RAK table at the Scrapbooks Exchange EB, which I crashed. (I am so sorry, I thought it was an MLA sales event.) Right after our Family Day, Candy picked me up from our house (I just had time to change my shirt) to bring me to Nette's house in Alabang. I was quite excited cause I had my eyes on some goodies from her store. Thanks to Timi for sharing her laces and ribbons and thanks to anyone who shared the stuff they couldn't use but I could certainly use.

And last but not least, thanks to Au and Nita, for the friendship and for the dinner at Kopi Tiam (even if I had to pay for food I hardly finished hehe), for caring well enough to take me out to dinner. Love you, guys. Sorry no picture cause DH had my camera.

Stray Cat

There are two things my kids, aged ten, eight and six, are obsessed with - pets and babies. They always get excited when they see their friends' younger sisters or brothers. And go berserk when they are around someone else's pet. Be it a cuddly puppy, twittering parakeets or clueless hamsters. These are things we do not have at home so they feel kind of deprived.

Our townhouse is not a good place to raise pets. There is not enough room for them to run around. There isn't even a patch of soil they could roll and get dirty on. I also fear that my kids would catch some disease from them. Like asthma from their fur. I know babies are a different matter entirely, and the only things contagious about them are their smiles and giggles, but then you can't just tell a baby - sit, roll, play dead!

But with three rambunctious grade-schoolers, no way was I going to have another baby. A pet seems more attractive by the minute. Though well-meaning friends tell me that raising dogs or cats is as costly as raising another child. But not to be deterred, I was sure it was only a matter of finding the right one. Is a pet that could take care of itself too much to ask?

About two years ago, a grey and white pusakal (pusang kalye) started coming into our garage. I didn't want to teach my children heartlessness by driving the poor thing away, but I did tell them not to pet it or feed it so as to discourage it from coming. Of course, my kids, ever pining for a pet, pusang gala or otherwise did just the opposite. They fed him bits and pieces of bread when no one was looking. My youngest daughter took to emptying her lunchbox on the garage floor for him. And pretty soon, not quite surprisingly, the stray cat has taken residence in our garage. Every night, without fail, it would come and stay. Always, he would leave in the morning to do what it is that stray cats do.

We named him Mao, no not after the great Chinese leader, but after those plaintive cries that he made. He didn’t meee-ooow. He just went “maa-aw, maa-aw.”

One day, he stopped coming. The days turned into a week, and still, no cat. The KiDS started missing him. They took to waiting by the gate and calling for him, hopeful that he would come. My husband and I believed he found a more hospitable garage - where the homeowners actually fed him real food.

I was working late one night when I heard him "maw-ing" in the garage. I went down and started scolding him, "O saan ka galing. Akala namin namatay ka na." He started maw-ing nonstop in answer, as if telling me a story. Then he limped towards me. And I was horrified to see him dragging his hind leg at a very awkward angle. His right leg dangled limply and uselessly behind him.

My husband theorized that he must have been run over by a tricycle and that he stayed in some ditch to heal before finally finding the way to our house. I was touched that out of the many houses in the village he chose to find haven in ours. With his broken leg, he couldn't go out and fend for himself anymore. He is fair game in the world of strays.

If I couldn’t drive him away before, the more I couldn’t turn him away now. So we took care of him and fed him. He hardly ever leaves the house now, except to relieve himself. (That’s the advantage of adopting a stray. He’s already potty-trained. The great big outside is his toilet.) When he hears our van arriving, he would drag himself from the street into our garage. He doesn’t run, he sorts of glides across the floor. The KiDS love him, imperfect though he is. He's provided enough distraction the kids have stopped asking for babies, thank God.

I do believe that cats communicate to their humans and to their fellow cats. Mao must have let out the feline equivalent of a village cry because pretty soon, other stray cats started spending time in our garage, rushing away only when they hear us coming. As we park our car in the garage, we would see gray cats, white cats, calicos, cats of all colors, leaping out of the way, squeezing their scraggly bodies under the gate. Maybe they are his barkada and they visit him. He certainly doesn’t seem to mind sharing his food with them. Maybe he's left word on the street, "Come, this is a happy place to live in. A good family to live with. Welcome, y'all."

Yes, indeed. I'd like to think that.

Late last year, there was one female cat who stayed with Mao more than the others. The KiDS took to calling him Barra. That’s my family name without the “I”, as Mao is my DH’s family name without the “I”. Sometimes, my KiDS are so smart they amaze even me. She got pregnant (Mao had to endure endless ribbing for his “prowess” because of that), but when she gave birth, none of her kittens survived. We looked for where she gave birth but couldn’t find it. It was raining nonstop then so we were worried about them. Eventually Barra brought home one kitten, but it has been so exposed to the elements it soon died.

Last week, Mao didn’t come home for a long time. My yaya reported that she saw blood outside in the street and we were worried something had happened to Mao. When he finally resurfaced, his face was swollen like something or someone hit him in the head. I took him to the vet and I was told that with his injuries (his mandible was broken and necrosis has set in), he was extremely dehydrated, and his age (the vet estimated him to be three years old), there was only a slim chance of survival even if we insisted on a surgery.

I had to make the difficult decision of putting him to sleep. The doctor said it was painless, but until the last minute, I saw Mao trying to escape from our grasp. He was a survivor to the last moment. I stayed with him the whole time as I didn’t want him to feel abandoned as he was in the early stages of his life.

Breaking the news to my KiDS was even more difficult, and soon all of us were crying. We all mourned Mao, even if he didn’t have pedigree, or even if he wasn’t the type of pet my KiDS could freely cuddle and hug. He was family.

In his collection of short stories, “Smoke and Mirrors”, Neil Gaiman writes of a stray cat which was adopted by a family. Each morning, his new human would find him badly wounded and he wondered what the cat has been up to, to sustain such injuries. One time, the injuries were so bad that the adoptive family didn’t let him out of the house until his wounds healed. During the time that he was locked in the basement, the owners of the house experienced setbacks. When the cat was let loose again, the family’s streak of bad luck ended, But still, each morning, they would find the cat wounded. So the owner decided to spy on his cat to find out what was going on. It tuned out that the cat was protecting the family against a recurring evil. Each night, evil would come visiting and each night, the cat would fight her, ending up wounded and battle-scarred. Each night the cat would lay his life on the line for his adoptive family. That left the his new human in a dilemma – should he keep the cat safe, or should he keep himself and his family safe?

I know that our cat is not that cat. He doesn’t battle lady (bad) luck from coming in our house. But he has surely brought compassion and happiness into our home. May his soul or spirit find peace in the great beyond.

January Recap

Whew! Been very busy lately, but productive busy.

First, the project proposal I wrote for a non-profit organization was "approved in principle" by the UNESCO. I just need to work on a more realistic budget for the $26,000 that they are giving. We are now just waiting for word from the Japan Foundation, but we are optimistic that will come through soon. I don't get paid for any of this, my MIL volunteered me, but I do not mind doing it. It keeps my brain sharp and it is something verifiable that I can put in my resume should I decide to work again. I don't think anyone has been hired by development foundations for non-stop scrapbooking. Hahaha.

Second, been busy at my KiDS' school, like I always said, if I must be a SAHM, might as well be Super SAHM. Wink wink.

Third, I actually reached my target number of LOs for January. An LO a week, and January has 5 weeks, therefore, 5 layouts to share.

You've already seen my Kaya! layout which was voted favorite for January. Thanks to all who voted for my LO, much appreciated.

But I cannot share yet my Round Robin LO until everyone are done with their interpretation of Christine's layout by the end of this month so we will have to wait until then for it to be unveiled.

It Must Be Love

This is my first traditional layout featuring myself and my husband as a couple. It's not that I don't think my DH and I make a cute couple (har-har), but somehow I have always been hesitant to scrapbook our relationship. DH and I are not a touchy-feely couple and we have few photos (usually taken by our KiDS) of just the two of us.

I started this LO during a fun scrappy afternoon at Alby's in Cavite. You can read Christine's account here. But I have to mention that it was a learning experience scrapping with Cookie, Christine, Nina, Alby and Pia. I picked up alot just watching them make their LOs.

Hidden Journaling:
Seriously, it's too mushy to be made public.

Materials Used:
PPS and diecuts- Prima; Alphabet Stickers - Creative Imaginations and Provocraft; Rubons - Provocraft; Stamps - Inque Boutique, Autumn Leaves; Ink - Colorbox; Embossing Powder - Ranger; Fabric Paint - Pebeo; Ric rac - unknown.

The Process:
First time to use Pebeo paints, thanks Cookie for helping me overcome my fear of making mistakes. I heat embossed the word LOVE using crystal sparklers but unfortunately it didn't turn out so sparkly. I'm not sure what I did wrong, must practice heat embossing some more.

Love Elsie Challenge

The next two layouts are for Visual Creation's Love Elsie challenge. I bought the Zoe collection pack because I knew I could use the papers and embellishments to make LOs about my KiDS love for art. Really trying to justify the cost here so made two LOs.

The Scrapbook Plan

I will have to admit the papers influenced me to try to scrap like Elsie. I didn't quite work out, but still, I was happy with the final result. I went overboard with the fabric paints. Love the dimension and colors they added to my LO.

Journaling:
Here's a PLAN:
- sleep less (only growing children need to sleep for 8 hours a day)
- watch TV less (you do not really need to know who the Desperate Housewives are sleeping with)
- disconnect from the internet and scrap

Materials Used:
PPS, diecuts, rubons, stickers from Love Elsie; Pen - Staedtler Tri-Plus; Paper crimper; Fabric Paints - Tulip and Pebeo. I like using the Tulip brand more than the Pebeo as the paint flows more smoothly, the tip is also just right. For Pebeo, I learned from Cookie that there are other sizes of tips available.

Paparazzo Parent

Now with this LO, I finally let loose and just scrapped as I liked. I love the PPS with the many cameras so I took my cue from that and used it to make, what else? A camera! Everything in this LO is about my obsession with taking photos. I took the photo myself facing a mirror. I turned the photo upside down to be true to the principle of camera obscura (ok, it's not real world colors but I had to convert it to black and white so it won't compete with the colorful papers I used to form the iris or lens.)

Journaling:
MUST...TAKE...PHOTOS...
of every moment...
every detail...
everywhere, everytime
and to SCRAP them soonest.

Materials Used:
PPS, rubons, stickers from Love Elsie; Pen - Staedtler Tri-Plus; Fabric Paint - Tulip, template to create the iris, heat gun to make the fabric paint puff.

***************
So there you are, I am on track so far. I hope that I will still be able to hold my own this February. Still many things happening, what with birthdays to celebrate almost every weekend (Diego's, Kahlo's, my mom's and my mom-in-law's).

Are You Smarter than a 4th Grader?

Last week was quite toxic for me as my KiDS had their 3rd quarterly exams in school. It was like I was taking the exams myself. I do not police my KiDS schoolwork and homeworks regularly because they manage to do them themselves. They do have to be reminded and I have to check them when they are done. But other than that, I can expect them to work on their assigments independently.

Exam times are different though. And I think I only have myself to blame. You see, years ago, I instituted a review system for exams. I tell the KiDS to have an hour of quiet time just reading their books and notes, after which I ask them questions, to check if they remember, and most importantly, if they understand what they read. We start by having them stand at the end of the kitchen. Each correct answer, they advance one tile towards the living room. It is like a game show and indeed, I start each question with, "Diego, game ka na ba?" (Now, it's "Quez-tioon," ala Wowowee). I like it cause it lessens the stress of exam week (like Kahlo said, "Exam week - eeek!), and there's the positive externality of the KiDS learning about what the other is learning. Unfortunately, they enjoy it too much, that it has become mandatory for us to do this every exam. Which meant that I had to read and learn, too. And it's not that easy to come up with questions.

I mentioned before already that school children these days are more advanced in their studies. For instance, part of Diego's Science exams was about the Periodic Table of Elements. If I recall correctly, we studied this in high school Chemistry, my junior year. And I must have blacked out during the entire year because I barely recall the noble gases and atomic numbers.

From Sarah's notes, I learned about sublimation. I knew all about freezing, melting, evaporation and condensation (which their grade 2 exams covered) but sublimation? Of course, I had to pretend I knew all about this process of solids turning to gas all along lest my KiDS think they are smarter than their Mama.

I wasn't able to scrap the whole week and I was really looking forward to a whole Saturday of scrapping. For the first-time our mini-EB was going to be held on a Saturday and I was quite excited to attend, too. I have missed far too many sessions, and I miss my scrapper friends. But! It was not to be, as my two eldest had a Recollection in preparation for Sarah's First Holy Communion. So I had to accompany them again and wait until they finished. By which time I already had the beginnings of a headache. A nerve behind my eye started throbbing (must be all those useless facts swimming in my head) and by the time we got home at around 6 pm, it had developed into a full-blown migraine. I could only crawl into my bed and sleep it off as we had run out of paracetamol. Also, I learned the best way to cure a migraine is a dark, quiet, cool room. I slept fitfully as I was awakened sometimes by the silent drummer in my eye.

I wish I can say that after more than 15 hours of sleep I felt better but I think my drummer had an after-concert party. So there were still some twinges of discomfort when I woke up. I read messages from Cabbie and Candy on my cellphone before it died, with Candy promising to bring me medicine and this mystery cure-all called Borherding (tama ba?) Candy and I were to meet Ella Henderson, a PS member who arrived for a visit from the US. I wanted to meet her and I thought the sunlight and fresh air (what little we can get in Metro Manila) would do me good so I hied off to Makati with Candy. I had a fun lunch with them (Mia, Nita, Tin, Aby) in CPK Glorietta. And oh, did I mention the Stampin' Up stamps from Ella?

If you think I am rambling on, then you are quite right. I just miss posting. And my writing about my migraine is bringing it on again (I think I am hypochondriac) so I'm signing off now. Until next...
